    WOW! District high schools represent! Looking at this week’s accolades one must ask, why don’t all district employees that live within district boundaries enroll their children in district schools? AALA members leading these schools exemplify instructional leadership resulting in student excellence.

    The week started off with Principal Susan Parker’s LAUSD Academic Decathlon repeat winning Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies(SOCES) Academic Decathlon team feted by the LA Daily News as they flew off to the Academic Decathlon nationals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.   • IT’S COMPLICATED!

    AALA’s purpose is set forth in its Constitution:

    • To promote the general welfare of all active and retired members of the Association.
    • To represent active members in their relationship with the Los Angeles Unified School District.
    • To communicate the Association’s point of view to the Board of Education, the Superintendent, the Local District Superintendents (now Region Superintendents) and other District personnel, local and state agencies, the media and public at large.
    • To build and maintain collaborations that promote the objectives of the Association.
    • To support and mentor new members of the Association as they embark upon their careers.

    Supporters of a proposed November ballot initiative wanted the all-important title of their measure to reflect their beliefs, a name like “Protect Kids of California Act.” But Atty. Gen.   • Unions allege LAUSD is misusing arts education funds 

    High school junior Maya Shtangrud may have given up on her childhood dream of learning to play the violin — but now, serving as an arts justice fellow at the ACLU of Southern California, she remains steadfast in her advocacy for arts education. 

    Like many, she hoped Proposition 28 — a ballot measure passed by roughly 65% of voters in November 2022 to allocate about $1 billion toward arts education each year — would lead to greater opportunities for her fellow students. Read more…

  • Adult Education Week

    AALA salutes the teachers, administrators, classified staff, and students of adult education programs! Did you know? The first recorded adult education class in California was held in the basement of St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco in 1856. The class was authorized by the San Francisco Board of Education to teach English to Irish, Italian, and Chinese immigrants. John Swett, who was the first volunteer teacher for the class, later became a California State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

  • The Right to Disconnect

    Does the California Legislature read the AALA Update? A proposed change to California Labor Code would effectively help AALA members maintain and the District respect their private time. AB-2751 addresses employer communications during nonworking hours and would require, “a public or private employer to establish a workplace policy that provides employees the right to disconnect from communications from the employer during nonworking hours, except as specified. The bill would define the “right to disconnect” to mean that, except for an emergency or for scheduling, as defined, an employee has the right to ignore communications from the employer during nonworking hours.     Here’s to all the APs who work endless hours, who take their work home with them, who skips meals to tend to a crisis at school. Here’s to the APs who wear many hats, who continue to smile and show up even when dealing with your own personal issues, and who are the glue that keep it all together by any means necessary. Continue to show up and never forget your WHY! In spite of budget challenges we appreciate you!!!

  • New Sun Valley development provides housing to LAUSD students and families

    A new housing complex opened its doors to formerly homeless families with children following the grand opening ceremony in Sun Valley on Monday, March 25.

    Sun King Apartments features 12 one-bedroom units, 11 two-bedroom apartments and three three-bedroom units, and has become a home to 25 families with students who attend the Los Angeles Unified School District — a much-needed development as LAUSD faces an increasing number of unhoused students.
